Mosaic

Mosaic can be made from many things, including ceramics, glass and stone, but the material I like to use best is Mexican smalti. This hand poured opaque glass is cut into small pieces of tesserae, or cubes and has a very large range of colours and textures. In a mosaic, each tiny piece of glass is set at slightly different angles which creates an art work that glints and shimmers as you move by. Using the ‘andamento’, or flow of the mosaic tesserae as they are laid down, I ‘draw’ with the mosaic tesserae, capture the lively, hand drawn quality in the mosaic’s preparatory drawings.
